The
original versions of many of the greatest written works in
history have been locked away from ordinary citizens for centuries.
To make the collection more accessible to the public, the
Remnant Trust has forged an agreement with the Jeffersonville
Carnegie Library Foundation to relocate the collection to
Jeffersonville, Indiana.
This
5,000 square foot, 20th century, limestone facility was
originally designed by the famous architect Arthur Loomis.
Located in Warder Park, the library will provide easy
access to the public. The newly renovated facility will
also act as a learning center - a place for scholars to
study and do research, for students and tourists to experience
history firsthand, and for university courses and seminars
to be held. Use of the facility in this manner will also
honor Andrew Carnegie's original purpose to provide valuable
written materials to all citizens.

The
interior of the building is being completely rebuilt to house
the exhibit. It will include display and storage areas with
a climate-controlled environment, study space and a learning
center. In addition, a one-of-a-kind three-panel bronze relief
sculpture, 2500 years of Liberty in Bronze, will be displayed
in the surrounding Warder Park. The sculpture displays a chronology
of imporant individuals and events which have made major contributions
to the pursuit of human dignity and liberty.
Creating
this new center of excellence will not happen overnight, nor
will it happen without the infusion of private dollars. Major
gifts are needed to renovate the Library and restore it to
its former glory. The phase 1 project cost is $4,000,000,
and includes site work and preparation, architectural and
design, Timeline of Liberty, and construction.
At
the end of the project (late 2006), The Remnant Trust and
the Jeffersonville Carnegie Library Foundation will achieve
the following eight objectives:
 |
|
The
people, and in particular the students of this region,
will have access to what is arguably one of the best collections
of major works on individual liberty and human dignity
in the world. |
 |
|
The
community will have a center of excellence that will attract
visitors from around the nation. |
 |
|
Scholars
in the region and beyond will have the opportunity to
study first editions and conduct new and original research. |
 |
|
Teachers
and professors will have an outstanding resource to expand
the classroom learning of their students. |
 |
|
People
will have access to seminars and other learning activities
at the new center that will heighten historical literacy. |
 |
|
The
historic Carnegie Library will be restored and used in
line with its original purpose - to provide valuable written
materials to all citizens. |
 |
|
The
center will bring another world class exhibit to the Greater
Louisville area. |
 |
|
The
center will further the concept of regionalism in the
Falls cities. |
